Shruti Sharma, Data Delivery Team Leader, Analytics, Insights, and Automation at Philips, speaks with Todd Foley, Chief Digital Officer and CISO at Lydonia, in a video interview about enabling self-service analytics with AI, the approach to data access, and advice for professionals considering getting into the data space.
Speaking of AI enabling self-service analytics, Sharma expresses uncertainty about the widespread adoption of the self-service model but states that AI is increasingly being utilized to address the “last mile problem,” enabling users to interact with data models in more intuitive ways.
She notes that a key factor in success is ensuring that semantic models are properly labeled and that KPIs are not only tagged to data products but also align with a shared vocabulary between users and the system. This clarity is crucial to asking the right questions and ensuring the accuracy of the responses.
Sharma points out that a lot of the less glamorous aspects of AI, such as organizing data, establishing visibility, and creating a common vocabulary, are foundational to making effective use of these technologies. She highlights the importance of understanding data lineage, maintaining data dictionaries, and ensuring clarity in defining terms within the system.
When asked about increased accessibility in light of underlying data problems, Sharma emphasizes the importance of not waiting for the perfect data infrastructure before engaging with AI, as demand for insights continues to rise. She points out that while AI can help create a more curated experience, human oversight is essential.
Further, Sharma acknowledges the growing trend of companies developing AI-powered analytic assistants but notes the complexity of obtaining user sign-offs to ensure AI meets their actual needs. She believes that while AI excels in certain tasks, it still requires human guidance to navigate ambiguity. She compares AI to an enthusiastic college intern — capable of learning quickly but requiring clear, specific tasks and expectations to be most effective.
Sharing advice for people considering getting into the data space, Sharma says, “Don’t hold back, jump with both feet in. There’s a lot of ground to be discovered. There is a lot of impact that the world still needs. The whole space needs more intentional, driven, and committed people than ever before.”
